New Surf Boat Christened PDF Print E-mail
Wednesday, 05 December 2012 23:58

altA large crowd of boat rowers, Life Members and Club supporters gathered on the beach side of the Elouera Clubhouse on Friday evening 30 November 2012 for the official launch of the Club's newest surf boat - the "Charlotte Breen 7".

It was a special occasion for all present as the granddaughter of the boat's namesake, Charlotte Breen, christened the new boat with champagne and wished it well on its competitive career.

The function commenced with the arrival of Club sponsor Tom Breen, his wife Rachael, daughter Charlotte and two great grandchildren of the Breen family.  Tom spoke to the crowd about his family's lengthy involvement with Elouera spanning 53 years.

This was the 7th surf boat that the family has donated to Elouera and that includes 3 IRB's.

Tom was introduced to the current World Champion Silver Medallists for U/23 women's rowing - our very own crew comprising Angie, Kate, Vanessa and Mel, swept/coached by Mark McDonald.

Carried by boat section members to the surf, the Women's crew rowed to sea, paused 500 metres off shore, and caught a nice swell to the shore to complete the ceremony.

alt

All present adjourned to the Club lounge to celebrate the special event!

The Charlotte Breen 7 will be seen in action in Surf Carnivals around Australia, proudly carrying the Breen colours.

The Elouera Club is most grateful to Tom Breen who has maintained his enthusiastic interest in all things Elouera.  Tom has indicated that "the Breen dynasty" will continue at Elouera in future years!

Elouera surf boat crews carried the Club colours with distinction in Adelaide, SA last weekend (15 - 18 November) when our Open Women's Surf Boat crew won GOLD in the 140 years Masters Women's World Championships Final.

The crew comprising Tracey Urquhart (stroke), Tara Lal (2nd stroke) Michelle Fretten (2nd bow) and Cassandra Gillson (bow) was steered by Grant Wilkinson to victory!  We salute this great performance!

Other outstanding results for the Elouera boaties were:

Under 23 women - Silver

Reserve Grade Men - 6th

Open Men - 7th

Open Women - 7th

120 years Masters Men - Silver

All events were conducted at Christies Beach and our boat coaches thought that it was a wonderful performance by all Club crews and a solid foundation has been laid for the Australian surf boat season.

Once again the Elouera boaties have ensured that our Club name was well to the fore in a high quality sur boat racing World Championships.
